You need peaks of around half height or a bit more on the Audacity waveform. When the waveform is taller (that is, its top and bottom lie closer to +/- 1 so filling more of the vertical space in the track), the audio is louder. When the top and bottom of the waveform lie closer to the zero line, the audio is quieter. If the waveform display on your track beyond the 1.0 to -1.0 range (i.e. the waveforms have been clipped off at the top or bottom) your volume is too high. Reduce it with Audacity's microphone volume control, and hit ctrl-z in Audacity and try again. If you don't know how much amplitude to give it, try small increments, such as 5 or 10 dB.

If it’s not enough simply repeat the effect, changing the (dB) figures to suit. If it’s too much you can either hit CTRL-Z to undo the change or apply a negative -2.1, in this example, with the same result. 2.
